Batting Basics is aimed at baseball and softball teachers and coaches. The batting technique is based on a scientific analysis of the mechanics involved, with a comparison of the body-rotation and weight-shift systems. The analysis, drills, etc., are a refinement of the first edition published in 1989. The text was written with teachers of all ages in mind. Special sections have been included to meet the needs of coaches in youth baseball programs.
From Batting Basics author John W. White: "There are many books available on batting technique; and in many instances, they provide contradictory advice. The reader has little to guide him when trying to sort through such advice. I have found that in order to analyze batting, the first requirement is to examine batting as a system. This means that all of the steps of the batting action must be examined together, so that their manner of interaction will be revealed. Then each piece of the puzzle can be tested to see if it fits with the others. The batter or the coach then has a basis or guide for evaluating tips and advice. I will demonstrate that the approaches of Ted Williams and Charlie Lau are each self-consistent and thus really are systems of hitting. I have also extended the analysis of batting mechanics details beyond the material developed by Williams and Lau."
